Premature Ejaculation and the Parasympathetic Nervous System

Learn to enter a Parasympathetic frame of mind where you are calm, relaxed and centered.
Understanding the correlation between premature ejaculation and the parasympathetic nervous system will help you to cure premature ejaculation.
The Nervous system has two main parts, the Sensory Nervous System, which receives and sends signals to the organs of the senses (smell, taste, sight, touch, hearing) and the Motor Nervous System which coordinates the movement in the body. The Motor Nervous system has in its turn two major parts, the somatic nervous system, which coordinates voluntary movement and the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) which coordinates the organs in our body such as the heart, stomach and intestines and also many of the muscles in the body. In most situations we are not aware about the ANS in action as it is involuntary and reflexive. For example, we do not notice blood vessels dilating or when the heartbeat rises. It can be trained though and some people can learn to control parts of the autonomous nervesystem such as the heart beat rate and blood pressure.
The Autonomous Nervous System
The Autonomous nervous system is important in two categories of situations:
1. In emergency situations where we must stay and fight or escape as quickly as we can.
2. In “non-emergency” sitations where we can relax and digest
In emergency situations a subgroup of the ANS is activated called the Sympathetic nervous system. Imagine that it’s a nice summer day and you are going for a walk in nature. Suddenly a lion jumps out in front of you. Do you stay and fight or do you run off as quickly as you can? In these kind of situations energy is used. The pulse and the blood pressure rise and the digestion processes stop. The Sympathic nervous system prepares the body to deal with unforeseen situations.
Let us suppose that the lion doesn’t jump out in front of you and you proceed as planned. You have taken a nice blanket with you, which you lay out on the grass and lie down on. Now another part of the ANS is activated called the parasympathetic nervous system. This systems main focus is to conserve energy. The Pulse becomes slower and the digestion processes are activated.
Premature ejaculation and the parasympathetic nervous system
From this point of view our sexuality is interesting as it is governed by both nervous systems. Men are able to get erections in a Parasympathic-relaxed state. These kinds of erections come from prolonged physical stimulation, such as for example massage. This kind of erection is often referred to as a “relaxed erection”. The whole body is somehow involved in this kind of erection. The breathing is slow and heavy and there is a deep relaxed feeling associated with it.
The Sympathic nervous system can also trigger an erection, which happens in the case of visual stimulation. If a man is looking at pornography he will very likely get an erection. It is not only outer visual stimuli, but also the inner visual stimuli from fantasizing, which can give a man an erection.
As the sympathic nervous system is associated with the fight or flight mechanisms in the body it is easy to understand that an erection created by the Sympathic nervous system is an erection which is ready to perform what has been dictated upon it by biology: to ejaculate quickly. Men who suffer from premature ejaculation are often edgy, always on the lookout for lions that may spring out on their path.
From the perspective of the nervous system, it is important for men to keep in mind that they should cultivate a Parasympathic way of life. This means an ability to be relaxed and not to let things stress you out. To understand that erections created by long term physical stimulation will last longer than erections, which were caused by the sympathic nervous system. A very important aspect to practice in life is the art of being content. “Santosha” this is called in the ancient art of Yoga. This is the ability to be rooted in the present moment and to be content and grateful for what you have.
