Western science sees thoughts and emotions as processes that only happen in the brain. Eastern philosophy sees the thoughts and emotions as biproducts of fields of energy, which emanate from energetic centers located up along our spine called chakras. There are 7 main chakras each governing different aspects of the personality and functioning of the body.

These are the earth chakra situated in the perineum area between the anus and the sexual organs, the water chakra situated behind the sexual organs, the fire chakra situated one finger breadth under the naval, the air chakra situated in the heart, the ether chakra situated in the throat, the command chakra (also called the third eye) located in the middle of the forehead and finally the Crown chakra located at the top of the head.

Each chakra gets progressively more complex and refined and dictates more and more subtle functions of the human being.

The earth chakra is very much associated with what we call the “reptilian” center of the brain. It governs the instincts such as hunger and sleep. All the rhythmic cyclical structures of the body are located in the earth chakra.

The water chakra is associated with our subconscious mind and sexuality. Thoughts and emotions flow like water in our being liquidly changing from one form to another. In dream analysis the ocean, lakes and bodies of water are often associated with the subconscious mind. Freud was one of the first western scientists to associate the subconscious mind with sexuality.

The fire chakra is related to power and the ego. Powerful people such as Hitler and Genghis Khan had huge activations of this chakra. People with a powerful fire chakra can lead and/or manipulate others as they have big and powerful egoes. Their presence is huge and magnetic. If a person with a powerful fire chakra enters the room, all people’s eyes will turn on that person.

The air chakra is related to the emotions of love and devotion. Parenthood is a good way for some to awaken this chakra as children with their need for attention force us to think beyond our own boundaries. People with this chakra awakened powerfully are atain saint like qualities. They act on behalf of the whole human race and not for their own egotistical purposes. They are the Mother Theresas of the planet always looking out for others and always reminding us that we need to focus on our hearts and think of the bigger picture.

The ether chakra is related to intuition and the ability to create. Great artists and geniuses in other fields have this chakra powerfully awakened. With this chakra awakened we are better able to access our intuition. We will always do the right thing at the right time, life will begin to become an effortless flow as we follow the guidance of our deeper self. An awakened ether chakra purifies the body and gives grace and refinement.

The activation of the third eye gives clairvoyance and intelligence. It is the chakra that controls all the other chakras (except the crown chakra). With this chakra powerfully activated, all bodily processes can come under our control. Advanced yogis and tantrics can bring thought processes to a grinding halt, the heartbeat can be almost stopped and the rate of breathing brought down to a bare minimum. Countless experiments have shown how yogis in deep meditation can be confined in small spaces with little air for weeks on end. With a strong activation of the third eye enormous powers of concentration and visualization are attained. From India there are countless stories of yogis who are able to materialize objects and make them disappear again. With the powerful awakening of the third eye, the matrix like nature of existence is uncovered and the person has direct access to the “programming” of the matrix, or more precisely in our case the consciousness which lies behind matter. Western science has begun to discover that consciousness and matter are related and that consciousness can have an influence on matter. An advanced Yogi would laugh at that “You only found out now?” he would say. Yogis know that consciousness is matter. If you control consciousness you control matter.

The crown chakra is our link to the divine. A person who has the third eye powerfully awakened can easily get lost on this level. He thinks he is God with all his power yet he is not God. With the full awakening of the crown chakra a person enters into union with the universe and becomes reunited with the source. There is no longer any separation with himself and everything else. Advanced Yogis can sit for hours in trance like meditative states where they are completely absorbed in the divine. They are in a state which in the yogic tradition is known as Nirvikalpa Samadhi.
